NAIN

Nain is a small town in the centre of Persia, very close to the famous city of Esfahan. Before the 20th Centry the town was famous for producing fine cloth, but with a decline in the industry, weavers from Esfahan were commissioned to create hand-knotted carpets. This link remains evident in the contemporary Nain carpets which are similar in design to those from Esfahan.

Nain carpets do exhibit a style of their own, often using highlights of blue on cream or ivory backgrounds. Depending on the quality of the carpet the warp and weft will either be cotton or silk, though cotton is more commonly used with highlights of silk.

The most famous and influential weaver in Nain is Habibian, the carpets produced from his workshop are some of the finest quality carpets produced and most sought after carpets in the world. Another famous weaver from Nain is Reza Jafari Naini, he has taught many weavers with this great and traditional art in his small workshop. These carpets are identified by a signature.
